Check disk usage

• du -h --max-depth=1
• du -h -d 1

Count lines in a file

• wc -l myfile.txt

Count columns in a file

Space-delimited file

• awk -F' ' '{print NF; exit}' myfile.txt

CSV file

• awk -F',' '{print NF; exit}' myfile.csv

Tab-delimited file

• awk -F'\t' '{print NF; exit}' myfile.txt

Synchronize files and directories

Local machine to server

• rsync -auvz -e ssh --delete /home/gota/research gota@myserver.org:/home/gota/backup

Server to local machine

• rsync -auvz -e ssh --delete gota@myserver.org:/home/gota/backup /home/gota/research

Copy files from one location to another

• scp myfile.txt gota@myserver.org:/home/gota/proj1/
